Kyela District Council was re-established in 1984 after series landmarks that led to the enacting of Local Governments Act no. 7 (District Authorities) of 1982.  It is one of 8 councils comprising of Mbeya Region. According to the census of 2002 the total population was 174,470 having an annual population growth of 2.4%. In the year 2009 it is projected to be 208,845 out of which the number of female is 108,069 where men are 100,776


Kyela District is a land for investment found in the Southern part of Mbeya region and it is located along the beautiful scene of Lake Nyasa. Its natural geographical position, topography, soil fertility, favourable climatic conditions and reliable infrastructures and the standing supply of power makes Kyela to be the best option for investors to come and invest. The District is bordering with the Republic of Malawi thus widening the markets through International business exchange.

The District council is proud of production in maize, paddy, cocoa, cashew nut and fruits. Also is proud of being with good tourism attractions such as Matema Beach, Mount Livingstone Ranges and Kilambo hot spring. In natural resources, fishing, wildlife and forestry are the activities that carried in the District.

Kyela District hold a free land (Land Bank) of about 1,118 hectors which is suitable for investment in agriculture, tourism and natural resources. The main areas of investment is Matema, Kafundo, Kanga and Makwale which is suitable for agriculture i.e. paddy, fruits and vegetable production; Busale and Matema are potential areas in processing industries and light industries and area for crocodile farming.

The District is interconnected with a good road net work hence accessible within and outside the district. About 125 km from Mbeya City to Kyela is a trunk road connecting the district to the Republic of Malawi. Many rural roads are gravel roads which are well maintained and passable through-out the year. Also the District is connected by National Electricity Grid which provides reliable power supply.

Preparation of these special pages on Kyela Investment has been a work done by cooperation with various stakeholders in and outside the District. These are District council Departments (Planning and Economy Department as a control and coordinating unit), Private sector such as Financial Institutions and Business Companies.
