Agriculture: Situation 

Agriculture dominates the source of revenue and economic concert of  Chunya District. The sector contributes 69% to the income of the district revenue and employs 85% of the working population in the District. The area suitable for agriculture is 2,300,500 Ha in which 1900Ha is suitable for irrigation and 2,298,500Ha is rain fed agriculture.  Major crops grown in the District are; Sunflower, Simsim, Tobacco, Ground nuts and Cereal Crops (Maize, Millet)

Livestock: Situation

Livestock farming contributes 17% to the District revenue and employs 2,357 of the total population. The area suitable for livestock farming is 135,000 Ha, and the area utilized is 60,900Ha. The available livestock in the District are Cattle (286,500), Goats (36,600) and Sheep (22,800). The District has a capacity of carrying 450,000 livestock unit per year.

  • b) Dairy production and processing: milk cooling and transport facilities; milk processing plants 
  • c) Meat production, processing and canning
  • d) Poultry farming: hatchery and breeding farms

  • f) Supply of drugs, chemicals  and vaccines for livestock
  • g) Investments in production, processing and marketing of hides and skins from cattle, goats, sheep,  for production of various types of leather and leather goods.
