Industries and Manufacturing The existing working Industries Mbeya District is not very much industrialized, either small or large scale industries, though it has all the opportunities that is suitable for industrial investment such as food processing and canning industries. There are mainly 2 large scale industries located within the District which are Mbeya Cement and Mbeya Textile. There are 134 small and Medium scale industries (SME’s) mostly oil pressing, carpentry workshops and milling machines. The presence of roads and communication infrastructures for example – Trunk roads from Dar es Salaam – Tunduma, Dar es Salaam – Malawi and TAZARA Railway that passes through the District creates an opportunity for export and marketing. Other potential is farming of different varieties of crops especially maize, coffee, pyrethrum, Irish potatoes, fruits and vegetables. Production trends indicate that about 34,900 tons of fruits/vegetables and 105,360 tons of Irish potatoes are produced annually. Investment Opportunities The current operating transport systems, telecommunication industry networks and the available financial services could effectively be used to support industrialization in the region. Mbeya Region has one of the fast growing economies in Tanzania. It has plenty of opportunities for investment ranging from agriculture, mining, manufacturing, transport, tourism, social services, infrastructure just to mention but a few.
