Agriculture and Livestock: The Situation Agriculture is the main occupation for City residents. Mbeya City has a total of 21,400 hectares and 9,937 hectares are suitable for agricultural activities. Furthermore, the land which is utilized for agricultural activities is about 9,406 hectares only. However the City has 426 hectares for irrigation scheme up to date only 101 hectares has been cultivated. Currently the City has 9 abattoirs, out of them 6 are for cattle and 3 for pig. The present livestock population in the City is estimated to be 74,444 carried at a zero grazing level. Number of livestock and Production by the year 2007/8 is as follows
