Social Infrastructure: The Situation Education Mbeya City composes all levels of education from primary to university. The universities are Teofilo Kisanji University (TEKU), The Open University of Tanzania, Mzumbe University Mbeya campus (MU). The colleges include: Mbeya Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Tanzania Institute of Accountancy (TIA), Uyole Agricultural Research and Training Institute (ARI, MATI), Mbeya Lutheran Teachers College (MLTC), Vocational Education Training Authority (VETA). All these higher education ![]() Health The City provides quality services using the existing structures which are regularly maintained through 4 hospitals of which 2 are private and 2 are owned by the Government, 6 Health Centers of which 4 are owned by the Government, 2 Religiously owned and 32 (12 Government, 18 private, 2 religious) Water Supply Mbeya City depends on 10 sources of water supply. They are all within the City boundaries with capacity to produce 30,000 cubic meters per day. Waste Disposal System Mbeya City council has managed to develop an effective and sustainable waste disposal system. The sewerage system has been developed to handle waste and sewerage from households and industries. About 50% of the city central Business area is served by the system while the remaining part uses on site disposal systems including septic tanks soak away and pit latrines. Waste from these systems is collected by cesspit emptier and deposited in the main sewer for final disposal. Solid Waste Management Solid waste management in Mbeya City is undertaken by City authorities. The rapid growth of Mbeya city and other growing urban towns calls for an alternative urban strategic solid waste management. Because of its incapacity (vehicles) and increasing of urban human activities, the City Council has not been able to cope with the generation of solid wastes. Social Security There are several security organizations that are represented in Mbeya city they include NSSF, PSPF, LAPF and PPF. Health • Construction of modern specialized hospitals • Hospital equipment and supplies • Partnership in the construction and expansion of hospitals through Private-Public Partnership • Partnerships in Research and Development in Medical and Health issues Waste Disposal System The volume of solid waste generated is a bit a problem so City council is seeking for an investor in recycling and or composting technology to reduce the volume of solid waste. The recyclable solid waste includes plastic products, iron and pap Iwambi Satellite Town Construction Mbeya City Council is planning to construct a satellite town which is having 1,500 acres for plot development purposes that will accommodate different services. Drawings are being prepared to identify potential joint venture with the council “Expression of Interest” has been put and advertised in the newspapers of Mwananchi and The Citizen dated 17/11/2008. Therefore, different investors are invited in this area. |
