Tourism:  The Situation

Mbarali District covers large part of Ruaha National Park of about 10,000 km2 of the District area. The National Park premises are so close to the District, famous known as Ihefu wetland where wildlife resources like wild animals such as leopards, lions, cheater, elephants, buffalos, eland, crocodiles, snakes, tortoises, bushbuck, roan antelope, zebras, waterbucks, greater kudu, jackals, impalas, hippos and a variety of birds like ostrich and water ducks are found in the area.

There is also Mpanga Kipengele Game Reserve in the southern part where several animal species are found. Apart from the Ruaha National Park and Mpanga Kipengele Game Reserve, there is wildlife corridor where animals cross from the Park to the Reserve and vice versa. The corridor is managed as Wildlife Management Area (WMA) by the Community Institution called UMEMARUWA

Furthermore, in the District there is another Wildlife Management Area (Waga) which is a buffer zone adjacent to Ruaha National Park also managed by the Community.

Investment opportunities in tourism include:

  • Tourists supporting services and facilities such as camping sites, hotels and restaurants, holiday resorts, permanent tented camps, lodges, guest houses, textile fashion especially to be constructed at Mlungu village where scene of Ihefu wetland can be viewed and also Kangaga village which is close to Dar Mbeya Tarmac road and near District headquarters on proposed investment areas
  • Tour operators, tour services, travel and tour management, car hire activities, Hunting safaris, Tour guide which has to be established near District headquarters on proposed investment areas
  • Tourism Marketing and Promotion
  • Boat safaris in Ihefu wetland 
  • Conference tourism near District headquarters on proposed investment areas
  • Geo-tourism, community and eco-based tourism as the District has historical sites that are tourist attractive like human footprint stone, chiefdom premises, etc
  • Cultural Tourism like Sangu traditional drama
  • Hunting and photographic safaris on WMA’s and Ruaha National Park respectively
  • Bird and snakes watching safaris

About Ruaha National Park

Size: 10,300 sq km (3,980 sq miles), Tanzania's 2nd biggest park.
Location: Central Tanzania, 128km (80 miles) west of Iringa.

Getting there

Scheduled and/or charter flights from Dar es Salaam, Selous, Serengeti, Arusha,
Iringa and Mbeya. Year-round road access through Iringa from Dar es Salaam 
(about 10 hours), via Mikumi or from Arusha via Dodoma.

What to do at Ruaha National Park

Day walks or Hiking Safaris through untouched bush. 
Stone Age ruins at Isimila, near Iringa, 120 km (75 miles) away, one of Africa's most important historical sites.
 
Best time 

For predators and large mammals, dry season (mid-May-December); 
bird-watching, lush scenery and wildflowers, wet season (January-April). 
The male greater kudu is most visible in June, the breeding season.
